YOUTH INDUCTION COURSE ON CITIZEN JOURNALISM AND PROGRAM PRODUCTION PROCESS
In an effort to reduce and prevent domestic violence against women, girls and youth, Kivulini Women’s Rights Organization has been engaging in a number of community development projects. Some of them have been Community Mobilization, Capacity Building, Youth engagement and advocacy.
Through youth program, Kivulini established that youth are the most key players in society transformation as they are dynamic groups and the future of today and tomorrow. Kivulini seeks to create them a strong voice to actively demand for their rights.
The Overall objective of youth induction course on community/citizen journalism and program production process is/was to create journalists who will reveal burning issues from society rather than to wait for events as some senior journalists do.
Specific objective was/is to have Community Investigative Journalists (CIJ) and Public Interest Journalists (PIJ) so as to accomplish the notion of Citizen Journalism.
Commenting on participant’s abilities, chief facilitator who is also a production manager of Afya Radio Faraja John said “If we were to make a competition between them and the current Afya radio production team after some days, no wonder youth will secure a trophy”
Faraja John with in depth elaboration about 5w+H to Angela Benect during their training.
Apart from appreciation, Faraja added that these promising community journalists and especially that still in school are likely to take career to another level has they all have qualities and ambitions to perform wonders.
The course also raised alternative ways to address employments problems. Participants were able to learn how to participate effectively in community radio stations. They also learned how to report events that affects community as they are products of those communities (for social transformation)
Therefore, through familiarization with radio studio, trainees have a good insight in their careers as there is place in journalism for almost everyone. The field requires writers, editors, artists, and communication technicians. It also needs managers, businessmen, administrators, salesmen, photographers, announcers and even actors.
Ray Eldon Hiebert in a book “Journalism” (1979) said that “If one start early, it’s really not hard to get into field of journalism”

“We want to raise community’s voice. We provide writing and reporting techniques to young generation because we want them to report issues affecting their families such as Domestic Violence, Child Domestic Workers, Social Accountability, Relationships and such alike….
Through trainings we expect to have a generation that could argue, read job descriptions of candidates during general elections and make analysis”
